Banned Tibeten Flag in Use
from 1912 - 1950

Commentary On The Tibetan Tragedy
© 2008 Richard Chandler St Cloud, MN USA

This is a very troubling and tense time for Tibetan people and their friends. As you may know, Tibet was invaded and taken over by Mainland China in the early 1950s. China called it “Liberation of Tibetan people.” During that time, hundreds of thousands of Tibetans were killed with estimates as high as over one million people.  Our United States did very little to protest this genocide.

Yet again, we have protests in the former country of Tibet by its people. China has been evicting all reporters from the area so independent verification of what is now occurring is extremely difficult. China claims that 10 “innocent civilians” died, primarily due to fires set by the protesters.

Yet again, the figures of the latest protest by Tibetan people and the Chinese government’s figures vary greatly.

One unnamed source of news told Reuters that a great many people were killed by the Chinese government police and military on March 14th.  “He said there were 67 bodies in one morgue alone. “He saw it with his own eyes.”  The exiled government of Tibet says that there have been over 80 people killed.

And once again, like so many years ago, I have not yet heard of any protest from our own government for this recent brutal tragedy and the ongoing crackdown by the Chinese. I find it ironic that we continue to do business as usual with China in the face of this, while at the same time we claim that spreading democracy is part of our justification for much of our involvement in other parts of the world, such as in the Mid-East.

The Dalai Lama, a Nobel Prize Peace Award recipient and a long time advocate of non-violent protest, said that if protests by Tibetans are violent, he will step down as the leader of the Tibetan Government in Exile.
