Ingred Bergman

Ingrid Bergman was born in Stockholm, Sweden and had a childhood filled with the tradgedy of her mother’s death when she was 3 and her father’s death at her age of 13. At age 17 she began acting in theater in Stockholm with the Royal Dramatic Theatre of Stockholm and soon after began working for a Swedish film studio.  Her American carreer began when around1939 when she was hired by a Hollywood studio to do a remake of her1936 Swedish language film, Intermezzo.

Like many actresses of the time, she was strongly encouraged to cap her teeth, pluck her eyebrows, where a good deal more makeup and change her name. She refused to do so and was considered to be one of the most natural looking actresses of her time and perhaps our own time in movie history.
Alfred Hitchcock used Bergman in his 1945 film Spellbound, his 1946 film, Notorious  and Under Capricorn in1949. She was also an accomplished stage actor and spoke fluently in five languages. Her movie career includes three Academy Awards and she is ranked fourth in the ‘greatest female actresses of all time’ honors by the American Film Institute. She is best known for her work opposite Humphrey Bogart in the 1942 film, Casablanca. She died on her birthday in 1982 at the age of 67 after a long battle with breast cancer.

- Ingrid Bergman  (1915-1982)
