Many a writer would wish that the following quote by Mr. Gallico was false, as it would be so much easier to have a generous muse dropping the best words and phrases onto the page, freely, liberally and mercifully edited.

“One is always seeking the touchstone that will dissolve one’s deficiencies as a person and as a craftsman. And one is always bumping up against the fact that there is none except hard work, concentration, and continued application.”

- Paul Gallico (1897-1976)

Stephen Leacock didn’t like his work as a college political science professor. He turned to writing to supplement his teaching income and is now known for his humorous writings.

“Anybody who has listened to certain kinds of music, or read certain kinds of poetry, or heard certain kinds of performances on the concertina, will admit that even suicide has its brighter aspects.”

- Stephen Leacock (1869-1944)

Albert Camus, a recipient of the Nobel Prize for literature said wanted to be known based on the individuality of his own work and not so much as belonging to the French existentialist movement of the times. He said, “No, I am not an existentialist. Sartre and I are always surprised to see our names linked....” Unfortunately, he died in a car accident just a few years after receiving the Nobel monetary prize.

“It’s a kind of spiritual snobbery that makes people think they can be happy without money.”

- Albert Camus (1913-1960)

Some have estimated that G.B. Shaw – the 1925 recipient of the Nobel Prize in literature - wrote over 250,000 letters in his lifetime. He was a music, art and literature critic and wrote over 60 plays and 5 novels. With this much material, he could probably get away with quoting himself without risking a plagiarism accusation!

“I often quote myself. It adds spice to my conversation.”

- George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950)

This controversial poet, writer, playwright, editor and lecturer was known for his biting sardonic humor. After an imprisonment late in his life for homosexual acts, he was relatively penniless for a number of years, so this quote may not be entirely based on Wilde’s bent for sarcasm.

“When I was young I thought that money was the most important thing in life; Now that I am old I know that it is.”

- Oscar Wilde (1854-1900)

This brilliant and prolific writer, teacher, philosopher and psychologist felt that an open mind coupled with pragmatic methodology made discovery of truth more certain.

“A great many people think they are thinking when they are merely rearranging their prejudices.”

- William James (1842-1910)

This quotation by Aldous Huxley, about the reality of idealism in the political sphere, reminds me of a more recent quoteas a lyric by another British writer, Gordon Sumner, [more popularly known as Sting]… “Love me like a war that’s just begun.”

“Idealism is the noble toga that political gentlemen drape over their will to power.”

- Aldous Huxley (1894-1963)

Author of 39 books and considered the leading management authority for the 20 th century is circumspect about the inner workings of humans…

“We know nothing about motivation. All we can do is write books about it.”

- Peter Drucker (1909-2005)
